Trouble with e-mail?

June 30th, 2009

If someone is unable to reach the mail servers, you can bypass a problem with their e-mail client by the following steps:

  1. Start > Run > Type in COMMAND > Press OK.
    • Can’t Send: Type telnet smtp.earth-comm.com 25 and then press Enter.
    • Can’t Receive: telnet pop3.yahoo.com 110 and then press Enter.
  • Response: 220 gateway1. yahoo.com or +OK X1 NT-POP3

The Customer’s computer is able to connect to the mail server fine. Continue following the E-mail Troubleshooter.

  • Response: Connecting To …Could not open a connection to host on port: Connect failed

UPDATE (12/9/04): If the Customer is getting this error message, have them try another Access Number. If it works with the new Access Number, alert a Manager.

The problem is that the computer cannot reach our mail server. This could be because of a firewall, or Norton program installed. You can have the Customer try another ISP’s mailserver. (i.e. telnet mail.earthlink.net 25, or telnet mail.ispwest.com 25).

If they CAN, then their is a problem between the Customer and our mail server. Ask a Mgr.

If they CAN’T, their is a problem with the Customer’s PC reaching ANY mail server. Look for a program that is conflicting such as Norton Internet Security, McAfee, Zone Alarm, etc.
